Frequently Asked Questions

This page is designed to answer common questions about training at MalX Core K9 and to help potential clients determine whether our programs are the right fit. Please read carefully before contacting us.

When should my puppy start training?

Puppies can begin structured training as early as six to eight weeks of age, provided exercises are developmentally appropriate and focused on engagement, learning, and structure rather than pressure.

Early training helps prevent problem behaviors before they form and builds clarity, confidence, and communication from the start. Waiting until behaviors become problematic often makes training more difficult, not easier.

Is there an age limit for training?

No. Dogs of any age can benefit from training.

While puppies absorb information quickly, adolescent and adult dogs are fully capable of learning new behaviors and developing emotional regulation through structure and consistency. Training is not limited by age. It is guided by clarity, handler follow-through, and appropriate instruction.

What breeds do you train?

MalX Core K9 works with all breeds, with a strong focus on working and high drive dogs.

Our training methods are especially effective for breeds that require structure, engagement, and mental clarity. While we welcome companion breeds, our programs are designed for owners who are willing to be actively involved in the training process.

Do you train reactive or difficult dogs?

Yes, private training is available for dogs with reactivity, over arousal, poor impulse control, or behavioral challenges.

Reactive dogs are not placed into group classes until appropriate foundations are established. Private training allows us to address the dog’s needs safely, clearly, and without overwhelming the dog or handler.

Do you offer police or law enforcement training?

No.

MalX Core K9 does not offer police certification, law enforcement training, or bite work.

We may provide sport foundations, drive control development, scent detection foundations, and structured obedience, but we do not certify dogs for law enforcement roles.

What training methods do you use?

Our training is structured, engagement based, and clarity driven.

We focus on

Clear communication

Handler education

Drive control foundations

Structured engagement

Consistency and accountability

Training is not about suppressing dogs or forcing compliance. It is about teaching dogs how to think, regulate themselves, and work with purpose.

Do you use treats?

Yes. Food is used strategically as a training tool, not a bribe.

High value rewards help build engagement, clarity, and motivation, especially in early stages of training. As training progresses, rewards are structured and varied based on the dog’s development and goals.

Do you use training tools?

Appropriate training tools may be introduced when necessary and are selected based on the dog’s age, temperament, size, and training goals.

All tools are introduced with instruction. Clients are expected to follow guidance exactly and ask questions if unsure.

Are puppy classes play based?

No.

Puppy classes are not play groups or dog parks.

While puppies may learn around other dogs, the focus is on engagement, impulse control, neutrality, and handler communication. Unstructured play is not the goal and is not permitted unless specifically directed.

How long are group puppy classes?

Group puppy classes run as a six week course, meeting once per week for one hour.

Enrollment is limited to maintain safety, learning quality, and individual attention.

How long are private training sessions?

Private training is offered in four week packages.

Sessions are customized after an initial consultation and may focus on obedience, behavior modification, drive control foundations, or specialized goals.

What happens if I miss a class?

Missed classes are forfeited.

No make up sessions are provided. Consistency is critical for both dog and handler progress, and missed sessions disrupt learning.

What if my puppy is sick?

Any puppy showing signs of illness including coughing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, nasal discharge, or other concerning symptoms must leave immediately.

Veterinary clearance is required before returning to training. Safety of all dogs and handlers is a priority.

What equipment do I need to bring?

Handlers must bring

A standard six foot leash

An appropriate collar or puppy training collar

High value training treats

Water for the puppy

Weather appropriate clothing

Retractable leashes and harnesses are not permitted unless otherwise specified.

Can more than one person handle the puppy?

No.

Only one handler per puppy is permitted per class.

Consistency is critical because the handler is learning alongside the puppy. Switching handlers during training creates confusion and slows progress.

Can I take photos or videos?

Yes, provided it does not interfere with learning, safety, or instruction.

Handlers are expected to give full attention during sessions. Photos and videos should never distract from training.

Where does training take place?

Training may occur at designated training locations, on our property, or in controlled public environments for exposure work.

Locations may change throughout the course to provide real world learning opportunities.

Are you responsible for my dog outside of training?

No.

Clients are responsible for safely transporting and securing their dogs before and after training sessions.

MalX Core K9 is not responsible for incidents occurring during transport or outside of scheduled training sessions.

How do I enroll?

All clients begin with a consultation to ensure the appropriate program is selected.

Enrollment is limited to maintain quality, safety, and individualized attention. To inquire about availability, please contact us directly through the website.
